Frequently Asked Questions

About Sif’s Hair Atelier

What is Sif’s Hair Atelier?

Sif’s Hair Atelier is an Icelandic luxury hair atelier specialising in premium human hair wigs, hair prosthetics, toppers and extensions.

Every piece is made with particular attention to realism, comfort, durability and natural movement. Our work is suitable both for clients experiencing medical or condition related hair loss and for those seeking exceptional quality alternative hair.

Our philosophy is simple: every woman deserves hair that feels entirely her own.

Where are your pieces made?

Every Sif’s Hair Atelier piece is handcrafted by me in Iceland. I source the most suitable hair internationally, then complete the entire creation process in my atelier, from preparing the hair and constructing the foundation to knotting, creating wefts, customising the fit and finishing every detail. Each piece also undergoes my personal quality control before it is carefully packed and shipped.

Collections and Hair Quality

What is the difference between the Sif’s collections?

Each collection is defined by its product type, hair quality, texture and level of refinement.

Saga Collection — Wigs
Saga offers premium human-hair wigs with a soft texture, natural movement and dependable durability. It is the introductory wig collection and provides beautiful, realistic results at a more accessible price point.

Signature Collection — Hair Extensions
Signature is dedicated exclusively to premium human hair extensions. The hair has a smooth, naturally fuller texture and is selected for strength, durability and reliable everyday wear.

Heritage Collection — Wigs and Hair Extensions
Heritage offers a more refined hair quality with finer strands, exceptional softness and fluid, natural movement. Its lighter texture creates an especially realistic result and allows it to blend beautifully with fine to medium natural hair. Heritage is available in both wigs and extensions.

Crown Collection — Wigs
Crown is the highest and most exclusive hair quality offered by Sif’s Hair Atelier. The hair is exceptionally fine, soft and lightweight, with delicate movement and a highly refined natural appearance. Crown is available exclusively for wigs.

The best collection depends not only on the level of quality but also on your natural hair texture, desired result and preferred balance between fullness, fineness and refinement.

What does “natural colour” mean?

Natural colour hair has not been artificially dyed into a standardised shade; its colour occurs naturally within the hair itself.

Natural colours are available in selected dark shades within the Signature Collection and in selected shades within the Heritage Collection. The Crown Collection consists exclusively of natural-colour hair.

Because this hair is genuinely natural, subtle variations in tone, depth and warmth are expected. These are not defects, they give the finished piece its unique depth, dimension and exceptionally realistic appearance.

What is the difference between processed and unprocessed hair?

Unprocessed hair retains its naturally occurring colour and has not been chemically dyed or lightened.

Processed hair has been professionally coloured to create a particular shade, blend or tonal result.

Both can be of exceptional quality. Unprocessed hair is valued for its natural integrity, tonal variation and longevity, while professionally processed hair provides a wider and more controlled selection of colours.

Is the hair Remy hair?

Yes. The premium hair used by Sif’s Hair Atelier is selected with the cuticles aligned in the same direction.

This helps preserve the hair’s softness, movement and manageability while reducing unnecessary tangling.

Wigs and Hair Prosthetics

Are your wigs Atelier Ready or bespoke?

Sif’s Hair Atelier offers two levels of personalisation:

Atelier Ready wigs are individually constructed after your order is placed; they are not pre made or kept in stock. The hair and essential materials for each specific design are already available in the atelier, allowing for a considerably shorter production time. The colour, length, density and overall design are predetermined, although selected finishing and customisation options may be available. Atelier Ready wigs are normally ready to dispatch within approximately 5–10 days.

Bespoke wigs are individually handcrafted to order and created specifically for each client. Measurements, construction, hair quality, texture, density, length, colour and finishing are selected according to the client’s individual needs and preferences. Production typically takes 9–11 weeks from the date of purchase.

Every finished wig is carefully inspected, professionally prepared and securely packaged before shipping. Availability may vary between designs and collections.

Are your wigs suitable for alopecia, cancer hair loss or other forms of hair loss?

Yes. Sif’s wigs and hair prosthetics are created with the needs of women experiencing alopecia, cancer related hair loss, hormonal hair loss and thinning hair in mind.

Comfort, discretion, scalp sensitivity, security and realism are considered when recommending a construction. Because every client’s needs and level of hair loss are different, an individual consultation may be recommended.

Can Sif’s wigs be worn glueless?

Yes. Sif’s wigs are constructed to be worn glueless when properly fitted.

If additional security is preferred, clips, combs, wig grips or adjustable bands can be added. A light water-based adhesive may also be used when appropriate. The best option will depend on the wig’s construction, the desired level of security and whether the wearer has biological hair.

For clients with complete hair loss or specific fit and security requirements, a bespoke wig is recommended.

What is the difference between lace and a silk top?

A lace top creates a fine, natural looking hairline and parting, with each hair individually knotted into the lace. The hair moves more freely and can offer greater styling flexibility, although the delicate lace requires careful handling.

A silk top uses a layered construction that conceals the knots beneath a scalp-like surface, creating an exceptionally realistic parting. Silk tops are generally more durable than full lace tops, although there is a subtle transition where the silk section meets the lace.

All Sif’s Hair Atelier silk top wigs include fine lace at the front to create a natural looking hairline.

What are bleached knots?

On a lace foundation, individual hairs are tied into the lace with tiny knots. Bleaching lightens the appearance of these knots, helping them blend more naturally with the scalp.

Bleached knots can create a softer and more seamless result, particularly around the hairline and parting. However, bleaching also weakens the knots slightly and may affect the longevity of the lace area.

Will the lace be completely invisible?

The high-quality fine lace used by Sif’s Hair Atelier creates an exceptionally discreet and highly realistic result. When correctly fitted, trimmed and applied, it is generally very difficult to detect. During normal wear, only a trained eye familiar with wigs may notice subtle signs of lace.

However, no lace is literally invisible in every situation. It may become slightly more noticeable when deliberately examined at very close range, in close-up photography or under particularly strong lighting than it appears during normal wear.

What density should I choose?

Density refers to the amount of hair used in a wig.

130% density creates a refined, natural level of fullness and is the standard starting density for many Sif’s designs.

150% density provides additional volume while still allowing the wig to look elegant and realistic.

The ideal density also depends on the hair length, texture, construction and desired result. More hair does not always create a more natural looking wig.

How do I choose the correct cap size?

Accurate measurements are essential for comfort, security and a natural fit.

Please follow the Sif’s measurement guide carefully, keeping the measuring tape flat against the head without pulling it too tightly. Measurements should be taken with your natural hair prepared as it will be worn beneath the wig.

If your measurements fall between sizes or differ significantly from standard proportions, please contact the atelier before ordering. A bespoke cap may be the most suitable option.

Can you recreate a specific colour or hairstyle?

Reference photographs may be used as inspiration, but an exact copy cannot always be guaranteed.

Hair colour can appear different depending on lighting, screen settings, hair texture and the starting colour of the selected hair. Natural and unprocessed shades may also contain individual tonal variations.

The goal of bespoke work is to create a result suited specifically to the client rather than mechanically duplicate another person’s hair.

Can I order something that is not shown on the website?

Yes. The pieces shown on the website represent only a selection of what Sif’s Hair Atelier can create, and new designs will continue to be added over time.

Different lengths, colours, textures, constructions and other custom details may be available. Please contact the atelier with a description of what you would like and, if possible, include reference photographs. I will assess what is technically possible and which materials are available before recommending the best approach and providing a personalised quotation.

Hair Extensions

Which hair-extension methods do you offer?

The website currently shows only a selection of the extension methods available. Sif’s Hair Atelier offers premium tape-in extensions and clip ins.

Other attachment methods, including wefts, rings, butterfly and keratin tips, may also be available upon request. Availability may vary depending on the hair collection, length, colour and desired result.

The most suitable method will depend on your natural hair, density, lifestyle and the result you would like to achieve. Please contact the atelier to discuss your requirements and receive a personalised recommendation and quotation.

Which collections include hair extensions?

Hair extensions are available in the Signature and Heritage collections.

Signature offers smooth, durable hair with a naturally fuller texture, while Heritage provides finer strands, exceptional softness and a lighter, more refined finish.

Saga and Crown are exclusively wig collections, but upon request Crown can be available in hair extensions too.

How much extension hair do I need?

The required amount depends on the density and length of your natural hair, the chosen extension length and whether your goal is added volume, additional length or a complete transformation.

Adding volume generally requires less hair than creating a significant increase in length. Very thick or bluntly cut natural hair usually requires more extension hair to achieve a seamless blend.

If you are uncertain, please arrange a consultation before ordering.

Can extensions be reused?

Premium human hair extensions can be reused when the hair remains in good condition and the attachment method allows it.

The adhesive tabs or attachment components must be replaced before reinstallation. Longevity depends heavily on home care, heat exposure, products, water quality and frequency of wear.

Ordering and Customisation

How long does a bespoke order take?

Bespoke wigs typically require approximately 9–11 weeks from the date of purchase. This allows time to source the most suitable hair internationally, import it to Iceland and prepare it before constructing, knotting, customising and finishing the wig entirely from scratch. Every completed piece then undergoes a thorough quality inspection before being carefully packaged for delivery.

The exact timeframe may occasionally be shorter or longer depending on the complexity of the design and the availability of the specific hair required. If sourcing the right hair causes an unexpected delay, you will be informed as soon as possible.

Quality and craftsmanship will never be rushed to meet an unrealistic deadline.

How quickly will an Atelier Ready piece be sent?

Atelier Ready wigs are normally ready to dispatch within approximately 5–10 days of purchase. Although the hair and essential materials for each design are already available in the atelier, every wig is individually constructed after the order is placed.

This timeframe allows me to complete the construction, apply the finishing options selected with the order, inspect the finished wig and prepare it carefully for shipping. If additional work requires a longer production time, this will be communicated as soon as possible.

Why do some customisation options cost extra?

Additional options may require more hair, specialised materials or several hours of individual handwork.

Changes such as increased density, extra length, complex colour work, knot bleaching, specialised foundations or bespoke measurements are therefore priced separately from the starting price.

Can I change my order after placing it?

Work on your order begins immediately so that it can be completed within the stated production timeframe. If you need to request a change, please contact the atelier as soon as possible.

Some changes may still be possible during the early stages of production. However, others cannot be accommodated once the specific hair or materials have been purchased or allocated, or construction and customisation have begun.

Where a requested change is possible, additional costs and production time may apply.

Do you offer consultations?

Yes. Consultations are available for clients who would like personalised guidance with choosing a collection, construction, size, density, colour, extension method or quantity.

Online consultations are available to clients both within and outside Iceland and are ideal for anyone who prefers the convenience of meeting remotely. They may include a visual assessment, measurement guidance and personalised recommendations.

In person consultations take place at the client’s home and are available within approximately one hour’s travel from the atelier. Appointments farther away may be possible by prior arrangement, with additional travel charges applied.

Consultation fees and booking information are available on the consultation page. If you are unsure which option is most suitable or require further information, please contact the atelier.

Care and Longevity

How long will my wig or extensions last?

There is no fixed lifespan for a human hair piece.

Longevity depends on the hair quality, construction, frequency of wear, sleeping habits, washing routine, heat styling, products, colouring and general care. Fine lace and hand tied areas are delicate and require more careful handling than the hair itself.

Premium hair can remain beautiful for a long time when properly maintained, but all wigs, hair prosthetics and extensions are wearable items and will eventually show signs of use.

How should I care for my Sif’s piece?

Always follow the care instructions provided with your order.

Use products suitable for premium human hair, detangle gently and support the hair near the attachment or foundation while brushing. Avoid aggressive rubbing, excessive heat and heavy product accumulation.

Wigs should be stored correctly when they are not being worn. Lace, silk tops, knots and extension attachment areas must be treated especially carefully.

Can I colour or heat style the hair?

Sif’s pieces are made from human hair and can be heat styled within appropriate temperature limits and the use of heat protectant.

Colouring is more complex. Previously coloured or lightened hair may not respond predictably to further chemical processing, and attempting to lighten it again can cause permanent damage. While Natural colors are more open to be colored.

Any colouring should be performed by a professional experienced with wigs or premium extension hair. Sif’s Hair Atelier cannot accept responsibility for damage caused by colouring, bleaching, unsuitable products or excessive heat after delivery.

Can I sleep, swim or exercise in my wig or extensions?

Extensions are designed for continuous wear between maintenance appointments, but they still require correct preparation before sleeping, swimming or exercising.

Sleeping in a removable wig is generally not recommended because friction can shorten the life of both the hair and the foundation.

Chlorine, salt water, sweat and mineral-heavy water may affect the hair’s colour, softness and attachment areas. Detailed care guidance will be included with your order.

Do you offer maintenance or repairs?

Hair maintenance, refreshing and minor repairs may be available in a near future, following an assessment of the piece.

Not every type of damage can be repaired, and repairs to pieces altered by another provider may be limited. Photographs may be requested before the item is accepted.

Shipping, Returns and Support

Do you ship internationally?

Yes. Sif’s Hair Atelier ships from Iceland to selected international destinations.

Delivery times, shipping costs, import taxes and customs procedures vary by country. Any import duties, taxes or local handling charges are normally the responsibility of the recipient unless otherwise stated during checkout.

Tracking information will be provided once the order has been dispatched.

Can I return or exchange my order?

All Sif’s Hair Atelier sales are final. Every piece is individually made, prepared or customised for the client after the order is placed. Wigs, hairpieces and extensions are also intimate, hygiene-sensitive products and therefore cannot be returned or exchanged.

Please review all measurements, colours, lengths, densities and selected options carefully before completing your purchase. If you believe your order has arrived damaged, faulty or different from what was agreed, contact the atelier immediately with clear photographs so the issue can be assessed.

This policy does not affect any rights that cannot legally be excluded under applicable consumer law.

What should I do if my order arrives damaged or incorrect?

Please contact the atelier immediately after receiving your order and provide clear photographs of the piece, its packaging and the shipping label, together with a description of the issue.

While the matter is being assessed, do not wear, wash, style, colour or alter the piece. The lace must not be cut, and all security attachments, ties, tags and hygiene seals must remain intact.

Please note that colours may appear different depending on the screen, lighting conditions and surroundings. Natural-colour hair is not artificially standardised, so subtle variations in tone, depth and warmth are expected and are not considered faults. Complex, multidimensional and hand-created colour work may also vary slightly from reference or product photographs. These images serve as a guide rather than a guarantee of an exact replica.

If the item is confirmed to be damaged, faulty or materially different from what was ordered, the atelier will provide further instructions and resolve the matter in accordance with the applicable terms and consumer law.

Will my order look exactly like the photograph?

Product and reference photographs are intended to represent each design as accurately as possible, but they should be used as a guide rather than as a guarantee of an exact replica.

Colours may appear slightly different depending on lighting, camera settings and screen calibration. Natural colour hair is not artificially standardised and may vary subtly in tone, depth and warmth between individual pieces and batches.

Complex, multidimensional and hand created colour work may also differ slightly from the photographs, as each colour is recreated individually rather than mechanically duplicated. These natural and handcrafted variations are not considered faults; they make every piece unique while preserving the overall character and appearance of the chosen design.

How is my order packaged?

Every piece is carefully inspected before being placed inside a protective silk storage bag. It is then presented in Sif’s Hair Atelier’s luxurious signature box, featuring a soft silk lined interior and designed to provide both protection and an exceptional unboxing experience.

Care information and any instructions specific to your piece are included with your order. For complete privacy during delivery, the presentation box is placed inside plain, discreet outer packaging with no Sif’s Hair Atelier branding or indication of its contents.
